The List of UPSI Chess Open Champions

No doubt the UPSI Chess Open is one of GiLoCatur's favourite local chess tournaments. Its ninth edition has just been concluded yesterday. GiLoCatur family have participated in four of them, namely - 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 8th editions.

GiLoCatur has also blogged about this tournament many times especially those editions where GiLoCatur and the children attended. You can use "Search This Blog" feature to view all the entries on UPSI Chess Open.

This year, GiLoCatur and the kids gave a miss to the tournament. GiLoCatur's eldest child, Fikri, is having his final exam in Segamat. GiLoCatur's only daughter and second child, Anis Fariha, is making final preparation for her SPM examination which is less than three weeks from now. The youngest child, Fahim Al-Faqeh, does not come home this weekend.

Luckily with the modern and advanced technology of today, GiLoCatur could follow and have updates on the UPSI chess tournament.

GiLoCatur would be very very happy if the modern and advanced IT technology of today being used to keep the information, updates, photos and history of the local chess tournament including the UPSI Chess Open. This what is lacking in the Malaysian chess community.

The Malaysian chess blogging is declining lately. GiLoCatur's Blog has not been updated regularly as used to be. GiLoCatur believes there are more and more local chess tournaments compared to several past years. Thus, lots of input for chess blogging. Sadly, the famous Gilachess is resigning from chess blogging. Malaysia is still far behind in chess compared to its ASEAN neighbours. Malaysia still does not have its GM or GrandMaster.

Enough with that, GiLoCatur would like to present below the list of Top 3 winners of the UPSI Chess Open.

UPSI Open Top 3 Winners

Note: GiLoCatur does not have the winners for the first edition held in year 2007.

The above list table provides many information at what angle you want to see. As examples:

  • Ian Udani is the most successful player having won four times and two times 1st Runner Up
  • The 4th edition winners are all Malaysians
  • The 6th edition winners are all foreign
  • The only female player who is in the Top 3 winners list is WCM Nur Nabila Azman
  • The youngest player to win the championship?

GiLoCatur would like to give some idea for the 10th Edition of UPSI Chess Open. Make a newsletter of about 5 to 6 pages which have history, information of the winners, photos, and special games of the UPSI Chess Open. Share it with the Malaysian chess community. How about that?

Bravo and kudos to UPSI Chess Club for organizing the UPSI Chess Open for the past nine years. KEEP IT UP!

Ian Udani - 4-Time UPSI Chess Open Champion

Monday, 12/10/2015

Ian Udani has emerged as the champion of the UPSI Chess Open which is just concluded yesterday. The win is his fourth for the UPSI Chess Championship. Ian who is ranked 45th in the latest FIDE ratings for his country scores 6.5/7 points the same as his compatriot, Lorena Carlo.  Having lower tie-break, Lorena is placed second.

The second Runner Up went to local player, Masrin Erowan, who hails from Sabah. He accumulates 6/7 points from 6 wins.

Below is the Top 10 of the Final Ranking for UPSI Chess Open in the Open category.

2014 UPSI Chess Open

As GiLoCatur was thinking yesterday that there would be NO UPSI Chess Open this year, GiLoCatur was wrong when Huzairi has published the flyer and info on the chess championship in GiLoCatur's Fan Club facebook group here. GiLoCatur is so excited because UPSI Chess Open is one  of GiLoCatur's favourite local chess tournaments. GiLoCatur and family have participated in some its editions and also missed some.

GiLoCatur and family mostly will take part this year provided free and available. When the championship will be held this year? Check out below announcement by Huzairi and flyer.

New UPSI Chess Open Champion

Finally, the new champion emerges at the UPSI Chess Open. GiLoCatur gets the news from the facebook. So, it is still unofficial. Both IM Mas and Ian Udani who were earlier edition champions can not stop the new champion. Do you know who is the new champion? It is known among the local netizens as Nf6. His full name is Mohd Saprin Sabri. Congratulation to him!

UPSI Chess Open Update

Thanks to Kaber for uploading the pairing and results of the UPSI chess open at www.chess-results.com. GiLoCatur could follow the tournament. Actually, at the time of this blog entry, GiLoCatur and wife are at SM Sains Alam Shah, Cheras visiting GiLoCatur's eldest son, Fikri, who in less than two weeks will sit for SPM examination.

Why only GiLoCatur and wife, eh? Where is Fahim? In fact, Fahim is having a scout camping in Shah Alam. His camping will end tomorrow.

Back to the UPSI chess open, GiLoCatur believes the fourth round is on going. Three rounds had completed. There are three categories in which the participants take part. In the age-group categories, the top six players live up to their ranking where they are paired against each other on the top three boards.

Click below links to find out the results of the first three rounds.

Kejohanan Catur Terbuka UPSI 2013 -Sekolah Rendah

Kejohanan Catur Terbuka UPSI 2013 -Sekolah Menengah

In the Open category, Ian Udani attempts to making another history to once again become the champion. He is ranked second. The best bet to stop Ian is IM Mas who is the top seed in this year edition. For sure, IM Mas also wants to put his name in the record to score another victory as the champion. As GiLoCatur recall, there are only three names who have become the UPSI chess open champions. Ian, IM Mas and Syakir.

We will find out the answer after the tournament completes its final round tomorrow.

Good Luck To All Participants In The UPSI Chess Open

GiLoCatur would like to wish GOOD LUCK and ENJOY THE GAME to all the participants who will take part in the UPSI chess open which first round will start tomorrow morning. Once again, GiLoCatur and family have to miss one of GiLoCatur's local chess tournaments.

In this blog, GiLoCatur has been writing about the past UPSI chess tournaments quite a lot especially the editions in which GiLoCatur attended. Key in "UPSI chess open" in the Search This Blog field, you will get the list of entries on the tournament.

A question comes into GiLoCatur's mind, "Is Ian Udani participating in this year edition?" Why such question? It is because for GiLoCatur, Ian is very synonymous with the tournament. Ian has been very successful in the tournament. Go to this entry to find out.

By the way, do you know what edition would be this year?

Are You "HERO"?

Can you spot the "HERO" in below pictures? It is pretty obvious, right?

In what local chess tournament that the "HERO" took part? Anyone can give the answer? Oh, you need a clue? The chess tournament has been held in tradition in the month of October. In fact, for this year edition it will be held on this coming weekend, from 25th to 27th October. Does it help?

The Top 3 Winners of 5 UPSI Chess Open Editions

The UPSI Chess Open was just been concluded last weekend. This year is its 6th edition. To GiLoCatur's knowledge, this chess tournament began its annual tradition since the year of 2007. GiLoCatur and the kids had attended three of the total six editions. We missed to take part in the two-day event last weekend since GiLoCatur's children need to focus on the final examination.

For those who were not at UPSI and want to know the final results of the tournament, please check out the chess-results website at following links - Open. Secondary and Primary categories.

The champion of the Open category went to Malaysian-based Filipino Ian Udani. In GiLoCatur's opinion, Ian has great record and the most successful chess player in the UPSI Chess Open so far. Why GiLoCatur said that? Check out the Top 3 Winners of the UPSI Chess Open editions below.

Does anyone know who were the Top 3 Winners for its first edition in 2007? If yes, please let GiLoCatur know.

2008 Champion

Ian Udani became the champion in both 2008 and 2009 editions. In 2008, the first runner up was won by Kamaluddin Yusof aka Abang Bro while the 2nd runner up spot was grabbed by NM Mohd Kamal Abdullah.  In 2009, Nur Nabila Azman Hisham becomes the only girl/lady player to be among the Top 3 Winners  so far after she managed to win the 1st runner up spot. Who was the 2nd runner up? The answer is Abdullah Che Hassan.

2009 Champion

In the 2010 edition, it was an all-Malaysian affair. Mohd Syakir Shazmeer, the eldest son of Azhar Mohd Said, who was the champion of the Secondary school category in previous year, emerged as the champion of the 4th edition. The second and third placing went to Mohd Saprin Sabri and Sumant Subramaniam respectively. If GiLoCatur is not mistaken, Ian did not participate that year.

Ian Udani came back in the following year. But its attempt to win the championship hattrick in 2011 was stopped by the then Malaysian top chess player, IM Mas Hafizulhelmi. Both of them drew against each other and had same points. But the former i.e. IM Mas emerged as the champion because he had better tie break. while the latter i.e. Ian Udani was declared the 1st runner up. Who was the 2nd runner up? The correct answer is Mohd Syazwan Zulkifli.

IM Mas (left) - 2011 Champion
Last weekend, both IM Mas and Ian Udani took part in the 6th edition of the UPSI Chess Open. The former was to defend his title especially against his rivalry opponent, the two-time champion Ian. While the latter wants to make a history to become the first one to make the hattrick in winning the chess tournament. At last, Ian Udani fulfilled his mission when he managed to win over IM Mas in the sixth round. In the final round, a draw is enough for Ian to score 6.5/7 points and won the championship. Even though, IM Mas won his last round game but a draw with another Filipino player in the fourth round and having 5.5/7 points he was denied to be among the Top 3 winners. Two players with 6/7 points had pipped IM Mas to emerge as the 1st and 2nd runner ups. They are Nelson Villanueva, another Malaysian-based Filipino chess player, and Aram Varahram whom GiLoCatur believes is from India. [Correction - Iraq, 19/10/2012 00:48am] If that so, it is the first time to be all-non-Malaysian Top 3 Winners affair in the UPSI Chess Open editions.

Isn't it a great achievement for Ian Udani to emerge champion THREE times and became the first runner up ONE time in the total FOUR editions of the UPSI Chess Open he participated? In cash terms, no doubt Ian had accumulated the most money prizes in the history of UPSI Chess Open. Well Done, Ian!

The UPSI Chess Open

The UPSI Chess Open is one of GiLoCatur's favourite local chess tournaments. As far as GiLoCatur remembers the tourney is normally being held in the month of October.  Its first edition began in 2007. So, this year it will be the sixth edition.

For those not in the know, UPSI is a Malay acronym for Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris or in English, Sultan Idris Education University. The university is situated in Tanjong Malim town which is famous for its PAU. GiLoCatur strongly believes all the Malaysian readers know what PAU is. But how about foreign visitors?

GiLoCatur just learnt that PAU is BAOZI in English. Interesting eh! Please visit Mr Wikipedia here to learn what baozi or pau is.

Back to the UPSI Chess Open, why it is a favourite tournament for GiLoCatur. The answer is simply due to its time control or format. It has longer time control compared to the common one-day rapid chess tourney. It is either 45-minute or 60-minute per player. It has been a tradition that the chess tournament is held for two days.

GiLoCatur had attended three editions - 2008, 2009 and 2011, out of its total five. The first edition was  a miss because GiLoCatur was yet in the Malaysian chess scene. While neither GiLoCatur nor the kids took part in its fourth edition in 2010 since GiLoCatur and wife went to Mecca to perform the pilgrimage.

2008

Not only both Fikri and Anis took part in the UPSI open that year, but also did GiLoCatur. The tourney was held on 25th and 26th of October. While Fikri and Anis participated in the Under 12 section, GiLoCatur  who was just rated at 939 at that time played in the Open category. GiLoCatur's best game in the 2nd edition that year was in the fourth round against Sahir Sarifdin of 17ChessClub who was about 700 points higher in the national ratings. Click here if you want to know what was the score accumulated by GiLoCatur. Below is the complete game.

2009

GiLoCatur did not participate in the 3rd edition in 2009. GiLoCatur just focussed on blogging and monitoring the kids' games. Fahim made his debut appearance that year in the UPSI Open. He joined his elder sister, Anis, in the Primary School (Under 12) category. Meanwhile, Fikri who turned 13th in that year was playing in the Secondary School category. Unlike his younger sister and brother, Fikri made to the podium receiving his winning prizes. The score of all the three GiLoCatur's children in the 2009 edition could be found here.

GiLoCatur could still remember that Fireyrook had snapped few photos of GiLoCatur wearing new GiLoCatur shirt. Check out the photo gallery here and here of the third UPSI Open.

2011

GiLoCatur could not bear not to participate in the 5th edition last year. After not playing for two editions i.e. 3rd and 4th, GiLoCatur who had improved from 900+ to 1400+ in the national ratings joined more than 100 participants in the Open category as well as Fikri, GiLoCatur's eldest child. What was GiLoCatur's performance in the tournament? Who were the champions in that 5th edition? Check it out! Here and  Here.

2012

It will be the 6th edition of the UPSI Open this year. The chess competition will kick off in about three weeks from now. The time control as per its flyer is 60-minute-per player of seven SWISS rounds. Unfortunately and most probably, GiLoCatur and the kids will not take part this year. The kids have to concentrate on their final exams during the period. GiLoCatur has been waiting for the tourney since last year. But what to do. GiLoCatur has to give more priority to the kids' academic.

But GiLoCatur believes many other Malaysian chess players will take part, right?

5th UPSI Chess Open - GiLoCatur "MengKerojekan" Or "Dikerojekan"?

Of the five UPSI Chess Open editions, GiLoCatur only had participated in two of them. GiLoCatur took part for the first time in the 2nd edition in 2008.

During then, GiLoCatur's national rating was just 939. GiLoCatur scored 3.5/7 points and was placed 43rd out of 81 total players. In that tournament, GiLoCatur consistantly played Queen Gambit when playing white. GiLoCatur also had an interesting and balanced match against a 1600+-rated opponent. Obviously at that time, GiLoCatur's endgame far weaker than today.

After three years, GiLoCatur has improved much better. The ratings has jumped from below 1000 to more than 1400 better  by 400 points.

Last weekend, GiLoCatur won five (5) games and lost the other three (3). A good result for GiLoCatur to be among the top 40 out of total 130 participants. GiLoCatur was seeded 41st. The seeding is actually not accurate since many more rated players whom ratings were not listed. It is either the player himself or herself does not know or remember his or her ratings. Or it is simply missing in the process.

By the way, a chess player should know and remember his / her ratings. Yes, our national ratings need further improvement but it requires time. Insya Allah, GiLoCatur will try to talk about this matter in other time. You can check your ratings at Gilachess website at below link.

http://myrating.gilachess.com/index.php

So, back to the seeding. GiLoCatur should be seeded more than 60th since based on GiLoCatur's check at the above link at least 20 more players have 1500s and 1600s MCF ratings.

GiLoCatur's first opponent is a novice or beginner. He played black. We were at table #41. As usual, GiLoCatur played Queen Gambit and GiLoCatur believes the opponent did not have a clue what opening is being played. He gave away (blundered) two pieces - a knight and a rook during the opening stage. One more thing, he kept asking GiLoCatur while recording his moves.

Recording is very important when participating in chess tournament. Malaysian chess players especially the beginners need to take note of such importance. It is very common in the Malaysian chess scene especially in the rapid format that many players do not record. The discipline in recording chess  moves of IM Mas should be  followed by us. That's why GiLoCatur prefers G/45 and G/60 format or time control because normally record moves is compulsary like in this tournament. It gives GiLoCatur comfortable time to record and keep a copy of it.

Chess Clubs in Malaysia must teach their members about this aspect. Make it a practice to record during club practice.

In the second round, playing black GiLoCatur played French Defense against a non-rated player. A check at Malaysian Chess Rating, he has actually about equal ratings as GiLoCatur. He castled queen-side and left the d file open for GiLoCatur. His strategy was to capture as many pawns as possible but leaving the king open for attack.

16. Rd4 c5 17. Rd6 Nf5 18. Rxa6

In the third round, having full 2/2 points GiLoCatur was paired against Mohd Fadzil Nayan at table #4 who is rated 500 points higher. Surely, GiLoCatur is a no match for him. GiLoCatur had a bad move on the 10th resulting in a fork.

GiLoCatur's next opponent was Muhammad Hairul Masdol (below picture). He is a non-rated player. After his 32nd move, GiLoCatur has the winning edge when one piece up and managed to fork his rook and queen. But unfortunately, due to the time pressure and inaccurate moves GiLoCatur lost the game when his two pass pawns were unstoppable. Due to his lack of tournament exposure, he did not claim when GiLoCatur's time had already ended. Hairul told GiLoCatur that he normally has the sparring session near KL UTAR near Wardieburn Camp.

long-haired Hairul

In the fifth round and the final game of the tournament's first day, GiLoCatur was paired against a University student named Mohd Haniff Sidek. GiLoCatur was late about 7 minutes since need to send GiLoCatur's wife, Anis and Fahim to the chalet where we stayed over the night. It was the lowest board for GiLoCatur at the tournament after two wins and two defeats.

25. Rf3 Rfc8

GiLoCatur got the advantage when managed to have double rook in the 32nd move. What made GiLoCatur happy is that GiLoCatur managed to convert the advantage to a win and did not fumble in the endgame stage. So, GiLoCatur had 3/5 points at the end of the first day.

During the same round however, GiLoCatur's eldest son, Fikri lost to his opponent whose name is also Hanif. After having three consecutive wins, Fikri had two consecutive defeats.

In the second day of the tournament, GiLoCatur won another two games and lost one.

Once again, GiLoCatur had a double rook combination. It was lethal because GiLoCatur managed to capture opponent's rook. Then, the win was GiLoCatur's when the opponent allowed GiLoCatur to have double rook combination at the 7th rank.

In the seventh round, GiLoCatur was paired against below player.

Norzaiasron Yahaya

Based on the name in the pairing list, GiLoCatur quickly identified him. He was the first runner up in the recent Cerdik Catur Semi Pro tournament. He said that he just made a comeback to chess tournament as a warm up for his coming inter-BSN chess competition.

GiLoCatur had already found out about his old ratings. He was rated at 1556 but under "Nor Zaisoon Yahaya". Surely, GiLoCatur found out that he is a very strong opponent and played solidly.

R7 - GiLoCatur vs Norzaiasron

GiLoCatur did not reply correctly when he made 8. .. e5 move. GiLoCatur thought that 9.e4 is the best move. His e pawn need to be stopped from marching to e4 square or else a fork for GiLoCatur. GiLoCatur's low-version Fritz suggests to move the white bishop on d3 square. Any other suggestion?

Saleh Abd Latif (1430) - Norzaiasron Yahaya (1556) [E61]
5th UPSI Open (7.18), 16.10.2011

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e3 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.h3 Nbd7 7.Bd3 Re8 8.0-0 e5 9.e4 exd4 10.Nd5 Nxe4 11.Re1 Ndc5 12.Bxe4 Rxe4 13.Rxe4 Nxe4 14.Nxd4 c6 15.Ne3 Qh4 16.Qe1 Bxd4 17.Ng4 Bxg4 18.Qxe4 Qxf2+ 19.Kh2 Be5+ 20.Bf4 Qxf4+ 21.Qxf4 Bxf4+ 22.g3 Bxg3+ 23.Kxg3 Be6 24.b3 b5 25.cxb5 cxb5 26.Rc1 Rc8 0-1

GiLoCatur did not anticipate the danger of the Queen. 15. .. Qh4 really suprised GiLoCatur. GiLoCatur could resign at this stage but GiLoCatur continued to see how GiLoCatur "dikerojekan".

In the last round, GiLoCatur was very lucky for being escaped from "dikerojekan" by the only GiLoCatur's lady opponent. If in the previous rounds, GiLoCatur used the lethal "double rook" combination to win, this time around GiLoCatur's opponent had the combination.

Round 7 - 28. Rde2 Reb8 29. Rxe3 Rxb2

Luckily, with one knight down GiLoCatur managed to "mengKerojekan" her. GiLoCatur believes she would be so frustrated that she lose and could not "mengKerojekan" GiLoCatur. That is chess. You have to fight until the end especially if you play against amateur chess players like GiLoCatur.

In short, GiLoCatur is very happy with own performance in the 5th UPSI Chess Open. Hope GiLoCatur will play again next year. DARE TO PLAY AGAINST GILOCATUR? :)-

UPSI Chess Open - The Champions

Sunday, 16th October 2011
Tanjung Malim

During the closing and prize giving ceremony for the UPSI Chess Open today, all the winners came to the podium to receive their medal and prize money after two days of gruelling chess matches. Three categories were competed in the tournament. Due to low participation in both primary and secondary school categories, the number of rounds were reduced from seven to six rounds. The format of play is 60 minute (G/60) per player. Three rounds each day.

While in the open category, the number of rounds is increased from seven to eight. This is because the number of participants is close to 130. Due to majority vote, one more round is added in the first day to make it five rounds. The time control is reduced from 60 minute (G/60) to 45 minute (G/45) per player. But the time control is as per schedule, 60 minute per player, in the second day. Thus, the tournament ended at 10pm in the first day, two hours late than the schedule.

What a gruelling first day of chess tournament for a five rounds of 45-minute time control. Normally, only four rounds for such time control in one day. It is really tiring especially for GiLoCatur since has to send Anis and Fahim as well as their mother to a chalet resort where we stay for the overnight before the last round for the Open category starts at 8.00pm. It is about 15-minute drive to the chalet known as Kalumpang Resort & Training Center (KRTC) that is located 10 kilometers from the tournament venue.

GiLoCatur has many to update on the tournament. In this entry, let's GiLoCatur first update on the champions for each category of the tournament.

Izzah (left) in Round 6 against her sister

The champion in the primary school category is Izzah Halim. She won all her first five rounds. In the last round, she drew with her younger sister, Farhana. Izzah came all the way from Segamat, Johor with her family where his father and younger brother also took part in the tournament.

The champion in the secondary school category is Mohd Aziz Farhan. He scored 5/6 points from 4 wins and 2 draws. He came to play in this tournament with his elder brother, Daniel Iskandar, who is the second runner up in the same category.

Aziz Farhan (right) in Round 5

As expected, the Malaysian top chess player IM Mas Hafizulhelmi has a rivalry with the former UPSI chess open champion, Ian Udani the Malaysian-based Philippines chess player. They drew against each other in the seventh round and won all their other rounds. Both have equal score of 7.5/8 points. But IM Mas is declared the champion due to better tie break.

IM Mas vs his Round 4 opponent

Syabas and Tahniah to all the category champions in the fifth edition of UPSI Chess Open. Until we meet again, Insya Allah, in the sixth edition next year.

UPSI Chess Open and Pilgrimage Season (Musim Haji)

Sambil main catur, have a weekend gateway.

Info terperinci UPSI Open

Let's forget  about UPSI Chess Open for a while. Next, GiLoCatur would like to talk about is Musim Haji.

GiLoCatur terasa sangat syahdu bila musim Haji datang lagi.
