5th NJCC - R1 Photo Gallery

The fifth edition of Malaysian NJCC or National Junior Chess Championship is being held at DAT Chess Center. Today is Day 2 of the tournament which format is nine SWISS rounds of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment. Two rounds completed yesterday on its Day 1.

The tournament is divided into two sections - Boys and Girls. All the three children of GiLoCatur are taking part. Both Fikri and his younger brother, Fahim, are playing in the boys section. Fikri is seeded 18th out of total 56 participating boys with 1679 Elo rating. While Fahim is ranked 43rd with national ratings of 1370. Click here to see all the participants.

GiLoCatur's only daughter, Anis Fariha, is one of nineteen (19) Malaysian juniors who take part in the girls category. With Elo ratings of 1573, Anis is the 8th seed. Go to this link to find out who is the top seed in the girls section.

Below are several photos of the 5th NJCC which GiLoCatur captured during the first round yesterday morning using BlackBerry.

Best of Luck to all contestants especially GiLoCatur's children. Hopefully, they have better results than last year. For the record, Fikri was 12th, Anis was fourth and Fahim was 40th.

DARE To Blitz at DATCC on the 2nd Day of 2012?

A couple of days ago, GiLoCatur was wondering if there would be any chess tournament in Klang Valley during this weekend especially on the New Year's eve. GiLoCatur was hoping Najib would organize a rapid or a blitz tournament in DATCC to celebrate the coming of 2012. Indeed he does. GiLoCatur just received his email as per below about an hour ago. Unfortunately, Najib chooses the day for the event on the second day of the new year which is on Monday.

GiLoCatur needs to send Anis back to her hostel on that day. Even though Fikri and Fahim are available on the tournament's day, it is quite troublesome to drive around between Kuala Selangor and KL. Furthermore, both of them need to be around when Anis goes back to her school.

But GiLoCatur believes many Malaysian chess enthusiasts especially blitz players and fans are able to participate in the event. GiLoCatur hopes and urges Najib to register the event at FIDE to make it a FIDE-rated event. If Najib does so, it will become the first Malaysian FIDE-rated blitz chess tournament.

GiLoCatur is not sure whether all the Malaysian chess organizers are aware about "Rapid and blitz rating list" announced by FIDE in its website. If not, read below copy and paste from FIDE website.

"The Executive Board meeting in Krakow approved the launch of "Rapid" and "Blitz" rating lists in 2012. We hope that all federations will take note of the regulations regarding these lists, and that they will ensure that tournament organisers in their nations are informed, as well as encouraging them to register their rapid and blitz events for FIDE rating."

How about the first Malaysian FIDE-rated Rapid chess tournament? Candidate Master Mohd Fadli aka stonemaster has promised that his 2nd Cerdik Catur Semi Pro tournament to be held on 15th January 2012 will be FIDE-rated. GiLoCatur can't wait to play in the event.

Najib's email:

17ChessClub Open Report

Yesterday 9-year-old Fahim and his dad, GiLoCatur, had participated in the nationally-rated 17ChessClub Open organized by Pengurusan Catur Ar Rahman. The 7 Swiss rounds of G/25 tournament was held in the DAT Chess Center. The tournament had attracted about 50 local chess players including Malaysian-based pinoy, Ian Udani.

In order to fulfill the mission of Improving Chess Ratings, GiLoCatur brought Fahim to the first rated chess tournament for the year 2011. His elder brother, Fikri, and sister, Anis Fariha, could not come along because they are at their boarding school and the school is just started. So, how was the performance?

Fahim just managed to win a game and draw another. In the first two rounds his opponents were rated-17ChessClub gang - Syed and Max. Long way to go for him still. GiLoCatur had to face five rated and 2 unrated opponents. GiLoCatur managed to win against both the unrated opponents and one of the five rated ones. GiloCatur's scores higher Tournament Performance Rating than the actual one i.e. 1233. A good start for GiLoCatur eh! :)-

Ng6 (right in blue shirt)

One interesting fact about the tournament is that the 17ChessClub tournament had attracted several Malaysian chess bloggers. They are Razali Hamzah aka Ng6, Shamsuddin Sabri aka fireyrook, Nor Ilhamuddin Shaikh Ali of ChessOdyssey, Rizal Ahmad Kamal who is the blog owner of Rizal's Chess Trading and GiLoCatur.

Neatly-dressed Max

(GiLoCatur : Chess players should emulate him for the dress code while participating in a chess tournament.)

Fauzi Ahim (left in above picture) had taken up the challenge to play in a rated tournament. As far as GiLoCatur can recall, he had not played in any rated tournament previously. Therefore he has yet have a national or MCF rating.

Blogger Rizal (right)

GiLoCatur notices several new faces in the tournament. Some are really totally new in chess tournaments while others just make a comeback like Foo Chee Kin, GiLoCatur Round 1 opponent. According to him, he is just making a comeback after five years. His last national rating is around 1700. In fact, Chee Kin was placed second during the recent Sarawak Open. Click here for the tournament's final ranking in chess-results.com.

Foo Chee Kin

Abdullah Che Hassan, the champion

So what are the results? Who became the champion? Who were the winnners?

Abdullah Che Hassan had been declared as the champion after having better tie breaks than Ian Udani and Ahmad Fadzil Nayan. All three of them scored 6/7 points. Fadzil could not manage to win or draw in the final round against Ian to become the champion. The recent Malay champion Saprin who beat Ian in the 5th round, could not continue his winning streak after being defeated by Abdullah and Fadzil in the last two rounds.

INSOFAR Elite Open Tournament

Don't think that there are no chess tournaments during the month of the fasting month RAMADHAN. In fact, this weekend on Sunday 15th August which is the fifth day of fasting to all the muslims, the first stage of the INSOFAR ELITE OPEN Tournament will be held at the DAT Chess Center. Check out below details!

The tournament will be carried out in four stages like below details. The fee is only RM50 for each stage. Meaning that you just need RM200 in total for all the four stages. It is just about 10% of the champion prize money or 20% of the first runner up prize money. A good ROI or Return of Investment, isn't it? Even if you place last in the final fourth stage, you will still earn extra RM50 and surely four days of chess playing excitement and fun.

The prize money for both the champion, TWO THOUSAND RINGGITS, and the first runner up, ONE THOUSAND RINGGIT, after the end of the fourth (round robin) stage is quite impressive especially to GiLoCatur.

GiLoCatur thinks that the champion can be crowned and awarded the Malaysian Rapid Chess King title that requires consistent and solid performance from the first stage until the last stage.

So, book your place in the tournament and show how good you are in chess. DARE TO TAKE THE CHALLENGE TO BE THE MALAYSIAN RAPID CHESS KING?

DATCC's Razzmataz Weekend Tournament Official Report

The above is the winners list of the Razzmataz Weekender Tournament held in DAT Chess Center on last weekend. Both Best U12 Boys and Girls, received chess sets donated by stonemaster Fadli.

Below is the official report by the arbiter, Najib Abdul Wahab ...

The DATCC organizes its Razzmatazz Weekend Rapid on 1st of August and the event was well attended by a lot of chess players and enthusiasts. GM Ziaur Rahman headed the list of 52 players who took part in the event which also included CM Fadli Zakaria, Kamaluddin Yusof, Muhd Nabil Azman Hisham and sisters, Nur Najiha and Nur Nabila, and MCF VP Haslindah Ruslan. Despite missing some of the more regular rapid players like Ian Udani and Abdullah Che Hassan, the tournament did not lack the nail biting and intriguing match ups and duels between some of the top ranked players. It was also one of GM Ziaur more challenging outing having to face tough oppositions from the young Puteri Munajjah in the first round of the game, Nur Nabila in the 4th round and Kamaluddin Yusof at the last round. According to Ziaur, this was one of his tougher events in recent outings and he was impressed with the strong showing by some of the junior players notably Tan Jun Feng, Puteri Munajjah, Low Jun Jian, and siblings Nur Nabila and Muhd Nabil Azman Hisham.

After the smoke cleared, GM Ziaur prevailed and came out on top with Low Jin Jian tight at his tail at a close second, followed by Muhd Nabil, Kamaluddin Yusof and Tan Jun Feng rounding up the top 5. CM Fadli Zakaria donated 2 chess sets which were presented to Puteri Munajjah as the best U-12 girls and Amier Hamzah Muhd Zuhri as her counterpart for the boys section.

UPNM (University Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia) showed up in strong support for the event with 12 aspiring players, half of the team whom has never played in a rated event before. At their request, in response to their support, a special prize was allocated for the best UPNM player which went to Mohd Izwan Idris.

Other notable winners were Nur Nabila Azman Hisham as the Best Lady player, Haslindah Ruslan for the best player with a rating below 1600, and Vinton Wong Hsien Loong for the best player below a rating of 1400. Mohd Raimi Rahim bagged the best unrated player.

The event was well managed as it started and ended as per the tournament schedule with the first round at 10:00am and prize giving ceremony started exactly at 6:00pm. DATC will be organizing another Rapid Weekend sometime after Hari Raya i.e. late September, and another one sometime in December with a Rookie Tornado event scheduled in between the two rapid events.

Those who would like to learn more about events and happening at DATCC, including the upcoming Malaysia Chess Festival 2010 scheduled to start on 28 August until 8 September, do contact Najib Wahab at +6016 338 2542, or write to najib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com.

GiLoCatur : A good showing and effort by several MSS Selangor chess players. Keep on participating and improving.

Poor Turn Out In The DATCC Dream Team Chess Weekend

From several chess blogs, GiLoCatur found out that the DATCC Dream Team Chess tournament held during last weekend - 29th & 30th May 2010, had a poor turn out. Only four teams came to play meaning only 16 chess players were participating including the arbiter.

Lack of publicity is said to be one of the main reasons for the poor turn out. If this is true, it shows that the local chess blogs have very big responsibility and role in the Malaysian chess. One of the main reasons GiLoCatur believes is that it is the examination week. Most of the schooling chess players are busy studying and preparing for the exams. Furthermore, many of them are attending MSS state centralized training held during the weekend including Selangor state team that is being held about 150 kilometers or more than two-hour drive from KL. For the core IPT chess players they are participating in the MASUM tournament. (GiLoCatur will write further about MASUM Chess later.) Several other Malaysian juniors were attending the First GM chess training at Excel Chess Academy.

But for GiLoCatur, keep up the momentum by having continuous chess tourneys. Four teams is good enough. GiLoCatur is very happy because 17ChessClub keeps active to participate in the local chess tournaments.

37th Selangor Open - In the Local Chess Blogs

Chess enthusiasts and fans especially the local Malaysians may get the updates and news about the 37th Selangor Open that just ended yesterday. Check out the following chess blogs:

  1. http://selangorchess.blogspot.com/ - The official blog of the Chess Association of Selangor or simply known as CAS. It has the the picture of the winners.
  2. http://www.gilachess.com/ and http://blog.gilachess.com/ by the "otai" Malaysian chess blogger, Andrew Ooi, who at the end could not participate in the tournament where he had pre-registered. As far as GiLoCatur acknowledges, Andrew of Gilachess has been chess blogging for many years.
  3. http://hairulovchessmaniacs.blogspot.com/ by the other "otai" Malaysian chess blogger, Mr Hairul, that provides some game analyses
  4. http://caturterengganu.blogspot.com/ by Muhammad Arshad and http://badbishops.blogspot.com/ by Badbishop that covers about Terengganu and Kelantan chess players respectively.

  10. http://2010chessodyssey.blogspot.com/ - interesting insights and perspective by Ilham, one of the tournament participants who is loyal to his home state, Terengganu it is. GiLoCatur's son, Fikri who played against him in the sixth round, is still long way to go to match his chess skills, tactics and strategy.

note : sorry if GiLoCatur misses out any other blog.

In terms of covering a chess event in Malaysia, many local chess blogs have taken the responsibility and challenge to promote and spark more interest among the society. Eventhough most of them have to juggle between work, study and family commitments to blog about chess in this country. Surely, still need much further improvement especially in the consistency of updating and report writing, they gives their best in doing so.

GiLoCatur suggests that all the bloggers been given journalism seminar or workshop to improve their writing, reporting and blogging skills. GiLoCatur urges the local newspapers to do their social obligation to teach and train these bloggers so that sports coverage and writing can be done more professionally and better. Chess associations should take this matter seriously to help them in promoting chess in the country and improve chess development. Maybe they can collaborate with any local newspaper to make such seminar or workshop "a dream comes true".

Nicholas Chan Won the 37th Selangor Open

The 37th Selangor Open chess tournament just ended. GiLoCatur and family left the tournament venue early since feeling not very well. We just arrived home after having an early dinner cum birthday celebration for Anis who will turn 12th next Wednesday. Furthermore, tonight will be a big game for all the Chelsea fans including GiLoCatur.

(picture from www.footballpictures.net)

Since GiLoCatur had a program this morning, GiLoCatur arrived at DATCC at around 3.00pm, after about half-hour the last round i.e. ninth began. In the morning, GiLoCatur just dropped both Fikri and Anis at DATCC at around 9.00am, an hour before the eighth round starts. Thus, GiLoCatur could not take the photos of the tournament's final day. GiLoCatur also missed to snap the eighth round pairings.

By the way, who is the champion? The answer is Nicholas Chan who drew the last round against Muhd Syazwan. If GiLoCatur is not mistaken, Nicholas won six and drew three games which accumulates to 7.5/9 points. GiLoCatur is waiting for the final standing. Once received, it will be posted in this blog. So, come again to check it out!

The defending champion, Nicholas Chan, is leading by one point. Three others with 5.5/7 - Ian Udani, Jimmy Liew and Kamalarifin, follow closely. Nicholas will play black against Ian on the top board. If the latter won, it will be open. The result of the second board is also important when this happen. Seven other players score 5/7 points.

Tomorrow is the critical day. Two more rounds will be played. Energy endurance is very important now for the players to go through to the final stage of the tournament.

BEST OF LUCK!

The top board tomorrow is the battle between our veteran and young top player. Between an IM and a FM. Between the defending champion and his very experienced opponent or challenger. In GiLoCatur opinion, the match may be the turning point or decider of the tournament.

GiLoCatur will also be busy tomorrow at the tournament, LOL. Busy waiting both Fikri and Anis playing. So, can not sleep late tonight too. Need to wake up early since the first of the three rounds tomorrow will be at 9.00 am. Even though no zero waiting rule in effect, for a very tough tournament like Selangor Open all players must be on time to avoid time pressure problem.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL PARTICIPANTS!
