Chess Championship Zone 3.3

KEDUDUKAN 10 TERATAS

HOPE MALAYSIA WILL GET ITS FIRST GM SOON!

World Chess Qualifiers Zone 3.3 Update

Meminjam kata sahabat GiLoCatur Ng6, "MARI KITA CARI GM!"

World Chess Championship Qualifiers Zone 3.3

Selamat berjuang IM Mas!

What are Tie-Breaks?

A visitor asked what are WP, SB and PS as can be seen in the chess results as the above. Surely for someone new to a chess tournament needs to learn a lot like understanding the pairing and the results. GiLoCatur also experienced the same thing before. It is good for chess newbies especially the parents to learn and understand chess terms. Don't be ashamed to ask as a Malay idiom (betul ke?) says "Malu Bertanya Sesat Jalan".

GiLoCatur is not an expert in chess terms but will try to explain them based on what known. So, if my explaination or fact is not right please someone correct me.

SNo. in the above chart is the seeding or starting rank number. Normally, the rank is based on the chess rating. For local chess tournaments, it is often based on the national ratings. The latest national ratings is based on July edition. Click here if you want to check one's national ratings. National ratings can be earned when partipating in a nationally-rated tournament. Beside national rating, there is FIDE-rating which only can be earned when participating FIDE-rated chess tournaments which are not many organized in Malaysia. For players who do not have ratings, they will be ranked (sorted) based on alphabetical order.

SB refers to Sonneborn-Berger. It is a tiebreak system. In simple words, if you win againts a player his or her score will be added, if you draw half of your opponent's score will be added. Therefore, you will get more points in SB if the opponent that you defeats wins more.

PS refers to Progressive Score. It will calculate your points based on a progress table. For example, if your results are - win, loss, win, draw then your progressive scores are 1, 1, 2, 2.5. Thus your PS will be 6.5, the sum of the progressive scores.

rat refers to your ratings (national or FIDE) and TPR refers to Tournament Performance Ratings which is your earned ratings in that particular tournament. So, if you win againts higher rated you will earn higher TPR, but if you lose to lower-rated or unrated it will decrease it.

Hopefully, the above explaination helps and provides better understanding for parents or new players in a chess tournament. You can check this link to learn further.

Temerloh Open

The 3rd Temerloh Open this year will be held on 1st and 2nd August. GiLoCatur plans to participate in the tournament.

GiLoCatur and kids - Fikri and Anis Fariha, participated in last year's 2nd edition Temerloh Open. The time control is 45-minute per player. It was held at Bangunan Umno Temerloh, Mentakab, Pahang near a bus station (above picture). It will be at the same venue for this year.

NM Zarul Shazwan was the champion. He came with his other sibblings (except his twin) and parents. Will he defend the tittle this year? In the final round he played againts his brother Zarul Shazwan. Just 60 plus players both local and outside participated in the tournament. Merdeka team tournament was also held during the same weekend. Hopefully, this year more players around the country would come and join the tournament.

The above diagram (white to move) is GiLoCatur's last round game againts a local player. GiLoCatur played white and it was the 38th move. GiLoCatur should had won the game because it would mate in 4 or at least 5, but GiLoCatur fumbled and made very big blunder and then resigned. During that time GiLoCatur used to make silly and big blunders. LOL!

Can you identify the checkmate moves? (mate in 4 / mate in 5)

Try solve the puzzle!

The playing venue is on the first level of the building. (Above picture) Fikri played white againts Shreyes Subramaniam who came down with his elder brother, Sumant, and sister, Sarika. Subramaniam family is one of familiar faces in local chess tournaments. The sibblings also are Pahang MSS chess players.

Prize giving time.

On Monday after the weekend tournament, GiLoCatur and family went to Lanchang Deerland Park and the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary.

The Deerland Park is privately owned. Click here for more details. GiLoCatur's children were happily feeding and playing with the tame deers. They got the chance to touch the deers where you won't get that opportunity in zoo.

There are also bears in the park. GiLoCatur's kids managed to conquer their fear to touch one of the bears. Yes kids! There are bears in Malaysia but the size are not as big as their counterparts overseas.

GiLoCatur and family could watch the elephants taken shower in the river while visiting the sanctuary. Anis Fariha and Fahim managed to ride an an elephant too.

It was an exciting moment and intriguing experience for GiLoCatur and kids visiting them. If foreigners could appreciate and took time to visit these two natural tourist spots, why couldn't us the Malaysians?

SO, LET'S PLAY IN TEMERLOH OPEN!!

Liga Catur Berpasukan Shah Alam - 10/7/2009

Dare To Do Flying Fox?

Dare to do an adventurous activity like flying fox? Both GiLoCatur's sons - Fikri and Fahim (above pictures), tried it once while participating in a chess tournament at SMK Taman Bunga Raya (1), Bukit Beruntung last week. GiLoCatur was happy when Fahim, a Year 1 pupil of SK Bukit Jelutong, had the guts to try it. Eventhough he was shaking and afraid at first, but after seeing how it was done by his elder brother he finally made it.

What a flying fox actually? Click here to what flying fox is all about. Do you know that there is a flying fox park in KL? Actually, there is. Go to this link to know further.

GiLoCatur was at a dilemma at first whether to allow Fahim to do the risky activity. But later "tawakkaltu a'lallah" and let him do the flying fox activity. Let him experience and test his bravery and guts. Shouldn't we as parents to encourage our children to have fighting spirits and warriors hearts? Furthermore, let our kids experience new things and explore the world. If not most our ancestors, including GiLocatur's, had braveness and guts, we including GiLocatur and children would not be here in beautiful Malaysia. So, we should be proud of our heritage - have the fighting spirit and guts.
