CIU - Chess Tournaments Held At Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)

Before GiLoCatur forgets, would like to share chess tournaments that will be held at UTP.

1. 31/10/2015 & 1/11/2015

UTP TCC 2015

2. NRBCC - 21 & 22/11/2015

NRBCC 2015

GiLoCatur has checked which editions of the UTP NRBCC that GiLoCatur and family had attended. It is easy. Just key in "UTP" in the Search This Blog column, kebam kedebum the entries on UTP will be listed.

Just realized that GiLoCatur and family had attended the first three editions (2010, 2011 and 2012) and had not been attended its next two editions (2013 & 2014). In fact, GiLoCatur took part in the second edition (2011). This year edition? Donno yet.

NAG2013 - After Day 2 (As GiLoCatur See It)

The 2013 National Age Group (NAG) chess competition is on-going in Bandar Seri Iskandar,  Perak. Two days had gone, six (6) rounds had completed. Today (Sunday, 3rd February 2013) will be the final day where last two rounds will be held.

There are six age groups - U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18. There are two sections which are Boys and Girls for each age group. So, who are the current leaders? Are the top seeds at the top of the table? Let's find out. Since GiLoCatur is not present at UTP, the results are solely based on the ones published at the chess-results.com website.

Under 8

While there are 16 participants taking part in the Boys section, there are only nine (9) players in the Girls section. Three players are leading the pack with 5 points out of the total six rounds. Two of them are from Penang while one is from Selangor. It is most likely that one of these three leaders will become the champion.

In the Boys section, a player from Wilayah Persekutuan named Wong Zi Yue is leading with 5.5/6 points. He is the top seed with national ratings of 1331. Is he related to Wong Jianwen? GiLoCatur is not sure. But can he become the next Jianwen for MSSMKL? Let's wait and see.

Under 12

Amier Hamzah Mohd Zuhri is the current leader in the Under 12 Boys category. He scored 5.5/6 points from 5 wins and one draw. Amier from KL breaks the Penang players dominance in this age group. Both Yinn Long and De Juan are trailing Amier 1/2 point. In the seventh round, both of them are paired at table #2 while Amier will be challenged by another KL player, Jen Shen at the top board. Interestingly. two Selangor players, Jian yang and Emir Rusyaidi will fight each other at table #3. Can Jen Shen spoil Amier's dream to become  the champion in the Boys Under 12 age group?
.
In the Girls section, the second seed Teh De Zen is the current sole leader. Thanks to her state mate, Teh Ming Min (De Zen's relative maybe?) who won against Puteri Munajjah of Selangor in Round 2. Since De Zen and Munajjah had played each other in the sixth round, the former has better chance to emerge  as the champion. Can her next opponent, Shu Zing, delay De Zen's celebration before the final round? Meanwhile, Munajjah can't afford to lose any point in the final two rounds in order to be among the top three winners.

Boys Under 12, Girls Under 12

Under 14

In the Boys section, the top seed is placed in the mid of the table before the two final rounds are over. The sole leader in this age group is another Penang player, Ooi Zhi Yang. His score of 5.5/6 points is one point ahead of the rest players. Three players have 4.5/6 points while seven others have  4/6 points. Can Zhi Yang maintain his winning momentum to be crowned as the champion?
.
In the Girls section, GiLoCatur believes the top seed, Nur Najiha, has the upper edge to be the champion. She scores the perfect 6/6 wins. She is leading her age group by 1 1/2 point. She edged her schoolmate in the fifth round. Like in the Boys section, three players have 4.5/6 points and seven others have 4/6 points.

Boys Under 14, Girls Under 14

GiLoCatur has to stop writing at this point. It is almost 3.30 o'clock in the wee hours. Hopefully, GiLoCatur can continue writing the U16 and U18 age groups later after sleep.

UTP National Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship UPDATE 1

17.11.2012

A special day for both GiLoCatur and wife. It was on this date seventeen years ago that our marriage journey began. How do we celebrate it? Watching our three sweet kids - Fikri, Anis Fariha and Fahim Al-Faqeh, take part in the 3rd National Rapid Chess Championship at the UTP's main hall.

Before The Championship Kicked Off

Both U16 and U12 sections
Chess-playing children and their parents
GiLoCatur and family checked into a homestay at Taman Maju on Friday evening after making an hour journey from Teluk Batik. We spent one night at the Nipah Bay Village in Pangkor Island or Pulau Pangkor in Malay. It is one of GiLoCatur's favourite places to visit. One of the reasons is that it was the honeymoon spot for GiLoCatur and wife.

We arrived at the championship venue at around 9.30 in the morning. Many participants especially for the age group categories had already arrived with their respective parents or accompanying adults. For playing purposes due to small amount numbers of participants in some age groups, Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 are merged into Under 12 category. Meanwhile, both Under 14 and Under 16 are merged Under 16 category.

Fahim has been registered in Under 10 category, Anis in Under 14 and their elder brother, Fikri, in the Open category. Therefore, Fahim has to play Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 opponents. Anis, on the other hand, will play against either Under 14 or Under 16 opponents. Fikri will have tough chess opponents in the Open category which is a FIDE-rated event. It will be his first FIDE-rated rapid tournament.

 Under 12 Section

There are 73 participants in the Under 12 section which consists of three age groups - U8, U10 and U12. With national ratings of 1370, Fahim is seeded 6th. Seven rounds had completed on the first day of the two-day tournament. Fahim has scored 5/7 points. The leader for this section is a Kelantanese boy named Nik Muhammad Haziq Najmuddin who has accumulated 6.5/7 points. Can Haziq live up to his top billing to emerge as the top scorer in this section?

 Under 16 Section

It is very obvious from the starting rank list here, Under 14 players are dominating the Under 16 section. The top rank is Dilwen Ding Tze How, a MSSM WP player. Anis is ranked third rated at 1585. After seven rounds, she has scored 6/7 points maintaining her third position. With perfect 7/7 score, Dilwen is leading seventy four players in the Under 16 section with one point margin. It looks unstoppable for Dilwen to emerge top in the section even though Anis will be his next opponent tomorrow (Sunday, 18th Nov 2012) morning.

In the Open section, 47 participants take part including two Filipino strong players. Four players share the top position with 6/7 points. Fikri has scored 4/7 points after winning four games. He fumbled a winning edge game to an experienced local player in the fourth round.

2011 NRCC - Tentative Schedule

The tentative schedule

GiLoCatur is in Tronoh, Perak at the moment where the UTP or its full name, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, is located. If you don't know why GiLoCatur comes to the university, the reason is to participate in the 2nd NRCC or National Rapid Chess Championship.

Eight rounds of 25 min + 10 seconds is the format of the tournament. Half of them had been played yesterday. Four more round will be held today. The above tentative schedule is obvious, right? Do you want to know how many points GiLoCatur has scored so far? he he he .. GiLoCatur lose the first one to Nabila, then drew the second. In the third round, GiLoCatur blundered in the opening when played againts Jian Wen of Kuala Lumpur. In Round 4, GiLoCatur's opponent did not come. Obviously, he went home after losing his previous three rounds.

Need to go now for a breakfast. Later ya!
