MSSD Petaling Perdana Bawah 12 Tahun 2017

Selasa, 11/4/2017

Kategori L12 (Lelaki Bawah 12 Tahun)

Kategori P12 (Perempuan Bawah 12 Tahun)

SKBJ Was "HEBAT CATUR"!

Sunday, 9th April 2017

Today is the second day of the 3rd SKBJ Junior Chess Championship. There are two categories for the primary school pupils - Under 9 Years Old and Under 12 Years Old (ie 10 to 12 years old).

Looking at the Ranking List after Round 6 as below, GiLoCatur is quite sad because "SKBJ HEBAT CATUR" looks gone. Only two SKBJ players in the Top 10 List for Under 9 category at 3rd and 7th place respectively. While no SKBJ player in the Top 10 List for Under 12 category.

Ranking after R6 - Under 12

Being the SKBJ pupils between 2003 to 2014, all the three of GiLoCatur's children were part of "SKBJ HEBAT CATUR".

Fikri (2008)

Having played chess for less than a year, Fikri was the only SKBJ L12 chess player managed to represent MSSD Petaling District in the 2008 MSSS Chess Championship. And he anchored the SKBJ L12 chess team for a Silver medal in the L12 team event. He made SKBJ proud for being on the podium for both Individual and Team Under 12 Boys event in the state championship. It was a bit unfortunate for him for not representing MSS Selangor in the MSSM Chess Championship after a play-off selection.

Anis Fariha (2008 - 2010)

Anis joined his elder brother in the MSSD chess championship in 2008 when she was in Standard 4. She missed to represent the Petaling Perdana MSSD after just being 6th in the final ranking P12 Individual event. Alhamdulillah, she was also on the podium after winning the fourth place in the team event with her three other team mates.

The 2009 and 2010 editions of the Petaling Perdana MSSD chess championship were the great moments for Anis and SKBJ. She helped SKBJ to become "HEBAT CATUR" after becoming champions for both the Individual and Team P12 events.

Anis were among several SKBJ pupils who represent the Petaling Perdana MSSD in the MSSS chess championship. She continued to bring glory for SKBJ in the MSSM chess championship after winning one Gold medal and one Silver medal. To the knowledge of GiLoCatur, the Gold medal won by Anis in the 2009 MSSM chess championship is the first one for SKBJ in the championship.

Fahim Al-Faqeh (2010 - 2014)

Unlike his elder brother and elder sister, Fahim began early in playing chess.  Fahim had represented SKBJ in the MSS chess championships since he was in Standard 2.

Among Fahim's achievements in the MSS scholastic chess championship during the five years tenure for "SKBJ HEBAT CATUR" which include 5 consecutive years in MSSD (2010-2014), 4 consecutive years in MSSS (2011-2014) and two consecutive years in MSSM (2013 & 2014) are:
  • Gold medal in L12 Individual event (2014, MSSD)
  • Gold medal in L12 Individual event (2013, MSSS)
  • Best Board medal in L12 team event (2013, MSSS)
  • Gold medal in L12 Team event (three consecutive years, 2012, 2013, 2014, both MSSD and MSSS)
  • Silver medal in L12 Team event (2011, MSSS)
  • Silver medal in L12 Individual event (2014, MSSS)
  • Bronze medal in L12 Individual event (2013, MSSD)
  • 5th Place in L12 Individual event (2014, MSSM)

Both GiLoCatur and wife are very grateful to the Mighty Allah for these achievements by all the three of our children in chess especially in the MSS scholastic chess championships and for SKBJ "HEBAT CATUR" but, honestly, a bit frustrated for a lack of appreciation from the school and its administrators for all the contribution to make SKBJ becomes "HEBAT CATUR".

GiLoCatur Stays At Home This Weekend

There are at least four local chess tournaments being held this weekend. Amazingly, none of GiLoCatur family is taking part. One of them even is just about a couple of hundred meters from home.

chess-results.com - MAS

The first one is SKBJ Junior Chess Championship.

All the three GiLoCatur's children were having their primary school studies at SKBJ or SK Bukit Jelutong. GiLoCatur never thought that they would school at the school. When GiLoCatur and wife moved to TTDI Jaya from Taman Bidara Selayang, wife was posted to SK TTDI Jaya in August 1997. Fikri was about eight months old then. GiLoCatur thought wife would stay longer teaching at the school.

Fortunately, in 2002 wife was selected among the pioneers for SKBJ which was sharing SK Seksyen 13 building. Therefore, when Fikri started his elementary school, he was going to SKBJ where his mother is teaching.

In 2007, GiLoCatur and wife started the activity (GiLoCatur prefers to call it a Buku Nilam Project)  of going to the PNM ie national library as the preparation for his UPSR exam in 2008. Almost every weekend GiLoCatur and family went to the PNM.

In June 2007, GiLoCatur was very surprised when Fikri asked GiLoCatur to bring him to a local chess tournament. GiLoCatur never taught him about chess during that time. Meaning, he learnt playing chess at school from his friends. The local chess tournament was held at Sunway College.

GiLoCatur was active taking part in local chess tournaments in early and mid 90's. GiLoCatur still remembers playing at Dataran Merdeka and Daya Bumi. The only chess player that GiLoCatur knows and remembers to this date is Mas Hafizulhelmi.

From the first chess tournament that Fikri took part, the chess journey of GiLoCatur's family had begun. Fikri missed to take part in the 2007 MSSD. In 2008 when Fikri was 12 years old, he was selected as one of the SKBJ chess team taking part in the MSSD Chess Championship. Alhamdulillah, his first participation was successful. He was the second Runner Up for Under 12 Years Old ie L12 category. Along with another SKBJ pupil, Fikri represented MSSD Petaling Perdana in the MSSS chess championship 2018.

Check out below chess blogs on  SKBJ Chess news and stories.

Back to the SKBJ Junior Chess Championship, this is the third edition. There are only three categories in the championship. GiLoCatur's youngest son who is 15 years old this year had registered to participate. But he had to withdraw after the championship was postponed to this weekend.

Today 7th April, I am 49

Today is Friday, 7th April 2017.

7th April is a very special day for GiLoCatur. GiLoCatur was born 49 years ago on this date. It was on Sunday noon.

Since all the three GiLoCatur's children - Fikri, Anis Fariha and Fahim Al-Faqeh, are away from home, GiLoCatur would celebrate with wife only tonight.

Let's take a look on the past photos of GiLoCatur.

Syabas & Tahniah Yeoh Li Tian! You Make the Malaysian Chess Community Proud

GiLoCatur would like to congratulate Yeoh Li Tian for his feat and achievement winning the Zone 3.3 Chess Championship. Li Tian has emerged as the champion in the tournament's Open Section held in Tagatay, Philippines from 24th February until 6th March 2017.

It was a coincidence that GiLoCatur was at KLIA 2 flying to Kota Kinabalu when Li Tian arrived home from the championship. It was a great moment for GiLoCatur having the opportunity to welcome Li Tian home after winning the championship, the first ever by Malaysian chess player.

When GiLoCatur knew about Li Tian and his talent in chess?

MSSS 2008 L12 Individual winners

The above picture taken during the MSS Selangor chess championship in April 2008 provides the answer for the above question. Aged nine years old then, Li Tian emerged as the champion for MSSS L12 Individual. The chess championship is also the first MSSS editions that GiLoCatur attended.

GiLoCatur did write about Li Tian here in late April 2008 as one of the four under 12-years-old Players to Watch. Surely enough, nine years later Li Tian is getting closer and closer to become the Grandmaster (GM), most probably the first one for Malaysia.

Another moment that GiLoCatur remembers about Li Tian is when GiLoCatur was crushed by him at one local chess tournaments in 2008 with Bishops.

Harman of AI Chess Interviewing the Champion, Li Tian

In the championship, Li Tian has scored 7/9 points from five wins and four draws. He had played against three GMs from three different countries - GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son from Vietnam in the third Round, GM Antonio Rogelio Jr from Philippines and GM Susanto Megaranto from Indonesia.

Put the great achievement of Li Tian aside, GiLoCatur is puzzled why Malaysia does not send at least one of its current Top Malaysian female players, the Malaysian 2016 Woman National Champion for example, to the Zone 3.3 Chess Championship in the Women's Section. Having achieved the best result thus far in the last World Chess Olympiad, one of the Malaysian Women 2016 World Chess Olympiad team members deserved to be given a chance to participate in the Zone 3.3 Chess Championship.

Three of the current Malaysian Top 5 Women players and 2016 Malaysian World Women Chess Olympiad team in the FIDE Ranking were in GiLoCatur's Players To Watch List (as per in below picture) nine years ago. They are Nur Najiha Azman Hisham (2031), Nur Nabila Azman Hisham (2013) and Puteri Rifqah Fahada Azhar (1954).

SYABAS & TAHNIAH, LI TIAN! Not forgetting the key and main factor behind Li Tian's success, GiLoCatur congratulates his parents for sure. BRAVO and KUDOS to Mr Yeoh Chin Seng and his wife, Mrs Yeoh aka Ong Pek Yean. Well Done!

A Standard Chess Tournament at PICC

Have you been at PICC?

What is PICC? Sorry for not explaining what PICC is. PICC is the acronym for Putrajaya International Convention Center.

As in its name, this convention center is located in Putrajaya. It was completely built in September 2003. PICC confines an area of 135,000 square meters, or approximately 1.3 million square feet. It can accommodate up to 10,000 people, with more than 57 halls and small rooms ready to be used. Please do not confuse with PWTC. PWTC is Putra World Trade Centre. To GiLoCatur's knowledge, PWTC had been the venue for chess tournament in 1980s. But PICC has never been a venue for a chess tournament.

PICC - source: meetingmediagroup.com

This will change tomorrow. The PICC will be a venuie for a chess tournament starting tomorrow. The chess tournament is called The International Classical Chess Festival. It is organized by Asia Chess Academy and SG Education.

ICCF flyer

Looking at the money prizes, GiLoCatur can say that the chess tournament offers the highest money prizes so far for a Malaysian chess tournament. It offers Malaysian Ringgit One Hundred Thousands worth of money prizes, trophies and medals.

Money prize structure

There are two categories in the tournament - The Open and The Challengers. The former category is for chess players with 1900 Elo Ratings and above. Meanwhile, the latter category is for chess players with 1900 Elo Ratings and below.

Below is the tournament's schedule.

The tournament schedule

GiLoCatur plans to go to PICC since GiLoCatur has never been at the grand convention center. It will be a great experience to do a coverage for the chess tournament.
