MSSD Petaling Perdana (Primary School) Chess Championship

SHAH ALAM - MSSD chess competition for primary school (Under 12) category for Petaling Perdana district started yesterday on Monday. For many years SK Seksyen 9 has been the host. There are two sections as usual which are the Boys and the Girls. The number of players take part this year are 156 in the Boys section and 86 in the Girls section. GiLoCatur's youngest child, Fahim Al-Faqeh, represents his school, SK Bukit Jelutong, in the Boys section. The secondary school category, both Under 15 and Under 18, was held last week.

For information, there are ten (10) districts in Selangor MSS. Petaling Perdana district is one of the biggest in Selangor. Actually, Petaling Perdana was part of Petaling district, while Petaling Utama was the other one. The   MSSD chess championship is a bit early this year because the national-level MSSM will be held in March instead in June as usual. Several districts have carried out their championships while few others will conduct theirs soon. MSSD Kuala Selangor will start its championship today. For Kuala Selangor district, both primary and secondary school categories will be held concurrently. GiLoCatur's only daughter, Anis Fariha, will represent her school in the event.

Four rounds had completed in the first day of the MSSD Petaling Perdana championship. Another four rounds will be held today.  Good luck to all the participants especially to Fahim and his school chess team. Below are several photos of the MSSD PP chess championship snapped using Nikon L14 digital camera.

Photo Journalism - Cerdik Catur Chess Challenge (Part 1)

Below are several new faces (at least to GiLoCatur) of the Malaysian chess participants in the recent Cerdik Catur Chess Challenge.

Fikri was happy during the tournament since three of his school seniors made their debut participation in a local chess tournament. They are Faiz Zairullail Mohd Yusof, Abdul Kahar Abdul Manaf and Wan Muhammad Shafiq Mohd Shukri.

Abdul Kahar of SMK Seksyen 18 (left) versus a "Mat Salleh" player.

Faiz Zarullail, another SMK Seksyen 18 pupil, (left) played black against a 7-year-old Nik Nur Nadzirah, which came all the way from Kelantan with his father, Cikgu Nik Azrihan.

A "lebai muda" can also play chess. The opportunity to participate in chess tournaments shall be given to new players like him. How did he know about the tournament? Via newspaper. So, efforts to advertise local chess tournaments in the newspaper shall be done by the organizer.

Blogger Fireyrook Was Paparazzied by GiLoCatur

Do you know what a paparazzi is? I think many of you know what it is. But by the way let's GiLoCatur explains what the word means.

Taken from Wikipedia, a paparazzi is an Italian term used to refer to photojournalists who specialize in candid photography of celebrities, politicians, and other prominent people. Paparazzi tend to be independent contractors, unaffiliated with a mainstream media organization.

GiLoCatur became a paparazzi during the recent Cerdik Catur Chess Challenge when candidly took the picture of a Malaysian chess blogger, fireyrook, while he was busy updating his blog. Sportingly, fireyrook was aware and allowed himself to be photographed so the element of paparazzi was not really there. LOL

Do you notice the ICT tools or gadgets used by fireyrook for him to carry out his mobile blogging? What really caught GiLoCatur's attention and eyes is the P1 wireless modem. It looks sophisticated eh, compared to GiLoCatur's celcom broadband modem.

But anyway, GiLoCatur hopes Mr fireyrook keeps on blogging and updating his chess blogs to provide latest news, info and updates particularly to the Malaysian chess community. WELL DONE and KUDOS to fireyrook.

JAYATI BLITZ Mini Tournament - 8 Jan 2010

On Friday night of 8 January 2010, GiLoCatur and Fikri, the eldest son, for the first time joined the 17ChessClub gang on a Friday Night Blitz mini tournament. Besides having a practice session, a Blitz mini-tournament of five rounds had been held. The playing venue is Jayati Restaurant located in Section 17 of Shah Alam.

And for the first time, GiLoCatur had officiated a chess tournament. Basically, not being an arbiter yet but a pairing manager. What a wonderful experience for GiLoCatur to learn how to do chess pairings.

Eight players were playing including GiLoCatur. The format was a 5-minute blitz. Below is the final results.

Ranking and cross table after Round 5.

The Rating Results Table

Sahir, the first seed with 1649 MCF-rating, won four games and drew one to be the champion. He drew with Syed in the fourth round. Zahorin or simply known as Yen Fischer, who is ranked fifth with 1551 MCF rating, was second place after scoring 3.5/5 points. GiLoCatur, being the lowest-rated player, had lost all the five games and placed last. LOL!

Bro Mudin had a game with Haq.

Syed (left) and Zali aka Ng6 (right) watched by Akmal (in the middle)

Max (left) versus Yen Fischer (right)

Fikri (left) versus Sahir (right)

Maybe next time other players can join the tournament. Hopefully, such activity can encourage and motivate others to have similar chess session and play at other places.

We have many chess fanatics or GiLoCaturs in this country for sure.

A weekly club chess league like this hopefully will flourish and bloom the local chess sport especially in Shah Alam. GiLoCatur hopes that such weekly chess tournament will be organized more and more. Surely, the more consistant chess tournaments, the better chess quality in this country. Hopefully, the participation of Malaysian young chess players will increase time to time. Our young chess players should be serious in chess. They are our hope. When this happen, insya Allah, Malaysia will have Grand Masters no doubt.

GiLoCatur observed and chit chatted with few participants. One of them is a lady teacher from Batu Pahat. She and few of her family members came down from Batu Pahat, at least 3-hours driving, to Shah Alam for a weekend gateaway dan participated in a chess tournament. What an effort. They just participated in the recent 13th Bandaraya JB Chess tournament. And now want to have more. GiLoCatur salutes to such effort and encouraged her to more committed and be serious in chess. Hopefully, GiLoCatur will see again the lady teacher and her family members in other chess tournaments.

GiLoCatur also chit chatted with one of chess opponents and another player who just participated for the first time in chess tournament. The former participated in this year's MSSD Petaling Perdana and got 5 points. Not bad after all.  GiLoCatur encouraged him, Muhd Azim Anwar Noor, to participate in more chess tournaments especially in Shah Alam. By the way GiLoCatur lost to him in round 3.

GiLoCatur believes many more people will participate in chess tournaments. The important thing is the promotion especially from the organizers. Chess tournaments shall be made attractive and interesting for people to participate. Chess players also should play their active role in promoting and encouraging their friends and relatives to play chess and participate in chess tournaments. Prizes also should be given to new comers or Under 1200 category for example.

MSSD PETALING PERDANA (SECONDARY SCHOOLS) CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

MSSD Petaling Perdana chess tournament had just completed yesterday. It was a two-day event held at SMK SSAAS (Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah) in Section 2, Shah Alam. The 8-round tournament was held in Dewan Tun Sri Lanang of the hosting school. Three rounds had been played on the first day which was on 10th February whereas the other five had been carried out on the second day, Wednesday 11th February.

The tournament is divided into four categories - Boys 18, Girls 18, Boys 15 and Girls 15. Boys 18 category attracted the most participants. 169 players from more than 4o schools took part for the category. Boys 15 category follows with 121 participants from 32 schools. The girls category had lower participants where Girls 18 had 84 players from 25 schools while Girls 15 just had 75 players from 22 different schools.

The lower participation from girls shall be studied since most schools are co-ed. Is it girls do not (and can not) play (or have interest) chess as the boys? Or is it the girls are more focus on their studying than the boys? GiLoCatur hopes the relevant authority and parties like Jabatan Pendidikan, PPD and schools will look into this matter seriously in order to bring back the glory in Malaysian schools co-curriculum, sports in the country and provide opportunities for our young generation to develop their capability, skills and talent. GiLocatur also challenge all the girls in Malaysia to excel in all aspects of co-curriculum similar to the boys.

  • SMK Bukit Jelutong has strong Under 15 teams while SAM TTAJ has strong Under 18 teams

TAHNIAH! to all the winners. GOOD LUCK! to all players who will represent the PP District in the state-level chess championship. For those who are not among the winners list, DO NOT GIVE UP. LEARN and PRACTICE MORE. BE SERIOUS IN CHESS. DO NOT JUST PARTICIPATE TO GET THE CERTS. BECAUSE CHESS HAS LOTS OF BENEFITS AND WILL HELP THEM IN THEIR STUDYING.

GiLoCatur also hopes that the school chess club teachers will be more serious in their school chess teams by providing chess facilities and programs, chess coaching and practices and chess tournaments experiences.
