When GiLoCatur says NAG, do you know what it is? 

GiLoCatur was introduced to NAG in 2008 when Fikri began his chess journey a decade ago. NAG is an acronym for National Age Group. Most Malaysian chess parents are familiar when the Malaysian age-group chess tournament is being held. It is usually in the March school-break.

But for this year edition, NAG has changed name. If you ask GiLoCatur which name is preferred? The old name NAG or the new one which is NYJ20 which stands for National Youth and Junior U20 chess championship?  Honestly, GiLoCatur prefers NAG. Why? Keep the tradition going. Maintain the name. It has become a well known name. Why need to change? Oh, GiLoCatur just realized that there is another category which is U20 or Under 20.

Only one of three GiLoCatur children is eligible to take part in the NAG 2017. Both Fikri and Anis are over 18 years old. The former will be 21 years old in November while the latter will be 19 years old in less than two months. Anis is eligible to participate in the U20 category, GiLoCatur believes.

GiLoCatur believes there are many questions among you regarding the NAG especially the winners of the past editions. Even, GiLoCatur has own questions regarding the championship that need to be checked in this blog if there are the answers.

GiLoCatur At 5th Edition of KUSESS Chess Open 2017

It is about six weeks that GiLoCatur had not updated this blog. GiLoCatur has been very busy and hectic at work. Prior to  the last weekend yesterday, GiLoCatur was in East Malaysia outstation. GiLoCatur went to KK on Monday, 6/3/2017, evening and arrived at KLIA 2 on Friday night at 10:30PM from Bintulu, Sarawak. On Saturday early morning, GiLoCatur with wife and eldest child, Fikri, drove to Kuala Selangor from home to be part of the 5th Edition KUSESS Chess Open.

The 5th Edition of KUSESS Chess Open

Unlike last year edition, the 2017 Edition of the KUSESS Chess Championship will be held in March. As per in the championship flyer in its blog here, the Individual Rapid event is scheduled on Saturday, 11/3/2017. Meanwhile, the Team Rapid event will be held on Sunday, 12/3/2017.

GiLoCatur believes this tournament can be a warm up tourney for the MSSD championships. Insya Allah, GiLoCatur's youngest child, Fahim, will take part in this tournament with several of his schoolmates.

SKPP 16(2) Chess Tourney

There are more and more local chess tournaments nowadays for the Malayasian chess fraternity. The money prizes also become more lucrative. As an example, the money prize for Under 12 and Under 18 categories is now more than three hundreds. Few years back, it was merely one hundred only. 

One of the local chess tournaments to be held in April has lucrative money prizes in GiLoCatur's opinion. The tournament is SKPP 16(2) Chess Championship. It is a 25-minute-per player Rapid with 8 SWISS rounds. It will be held on 2nd April 2017. The venue is at Universiti Nilai Hall in Negeri Sembilan.

The chess tournament is jointly organized by Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 16(2) and Classical Chess. GiLoCatur believes this tournament will attract the Malaysian chess players because it is only for the Malaysians. 

For GiLoCatur, the fact that the tournament is held in April, the month in which GiLoCatur was born nearly 49 years ago, it will be in GiLoCatur's calendar. Chess Blogger versus Chess Blogger in a Chess Tourney

Normally, the chess blogger seldom being photographed during a chess tournament unless there is another chess blogger in action. It is quite rare moment when a chess blogger had the chance to photograph two chess bloggers played against each other in a chess tourney. And I believe it will be very rare nowadays to see Andrew Ooi Boon Seng playing in a chess tourney.

Attended The Wedding Reception of Cikgu Zull and Cikgu Sufiah's Daughter

Few hours ago, GiLoCatur and the whole family attended a wedding reception at the Grand Bluewave Hotel. It is the wedding of Nur Shazwani, the 2007 Edition Malaysia's National Woman Master (NWM). She is the daughter of Cikgu Zullkafli and Cikgu Sufiah of the MSS Selangor chess.

Officially, GiLoCatur knew both of them during the MSSS chess championship in 2008 when GiLoCatur's eldest son took part in the tournament. Then in 2009, GiLoCatur's only daughter, Anis Fariha, made her maiden appearance in the MSSM chess championship representing the MSS Selangor team.

It is nearly four years already when GiLoCatur had attended the wedding reception of the couple's eldest child, Zarul Shafiq. How the time flies so quickly. Please click here to see the pictures. For sure, GiLoCatur's children have grown as well. Just see below photos.

Tahun 2016 bakal meninggalkan kita. Tahun 2017 bakal mendatang. Di kala usiaku sekarang, pertukaran tahun bakal kusambut dengan cara yang berbeza tidak seperti di kala usiaku dua dekad yang lalu. Kenapa? Kerana dek usiaku semakin banyak, aku semaking matang dan dewasa. Apa yg aku tak faham dahulu, kini aku sudah mengerti. Apa yg aku tidak pasti dahulu, kini aku sudah yakin. Apa yg sering aku lupa dahulu, kini aku sering ingat.

Selamat tinggal 2016. Banyak kenangan yg kau berikan. Banyak pengalaman yg ku tempuh. Banyak peristiwa yg ku lalui. Banyak kejayaan sudah ku cipta. Banyak kegagalan juga dirasa. Banyak kisah yg telah berlaku.

21st GACC - Day 1

Hari Pertama kejohanan catur GACC kali ke 21 baru sahaja selesai semalam, Khamis 19/1/2017. Seramai seratus peserta menyertai kejohanan ini yang akan berlansung selama lima hari. Para peserta akan bertarung sebanyak 9 pusingan SWISS dengan kawalan masa 90 minit + tambahan 30 saat.

GACC 2017

Berdasarkan senarai pemain yang menyertai kejohanan Edisi 2017 ini, pemain-pemain catur dari universiti tempatan bakal bersaing dengan pemain-pemain catur dari universiti negara India yang mendominasi Senarai 10 Pilihan Teratas. 

Anak sulung GiLoCatur iaitu Fikri merupakan salah seorang peserta. Edisi 2017 merupakan kali ketiga penyertaan Fikri. Bagi GiLoCatur, GACC tahun ini lebih bermakna kerana seorang lagi anak turut serta mengambil bahagian. Anis Fariha, satu-satunya anak perempuan GiLoCatur terpaksa mengorbankan beberapa hari kuliah untuk membantu pasukan UiTM di kejohanan GACC ini.

UM-KPT Chess Championship Champions (Unofficial)

The three-day UM-KPT Chess Championship has just concluded today. All the participants both Male and Female play in one category but the prizes are separate. 

Below are the Top 3 winners for the championship. GiLoCatur considers it unofficial because GiLoCatur does not have the Final Ranking hard copy and it is not available yet at chess-results.com.

In the Women's  Section, Nur Nabila Azman Hisham emerges as the champion after collecting 7/9 points while Alia Anin Azwa Bakri is the First Runner Up with 6/9 points. Meanwhile, the Second Runner Up goes to Fairuz Hamizah Ahmad Fuad (as GiLoCatur remembers).

Sabak Bernam Chess Closed

GiLoCatur was born in Sabak Bernam district which is located in the northern part of Selangor 48 years ago. GiLoCatur's father named Abdul Latif built a house on Jalan Sultan in the village called Sungai Tengar in 1951. GiLoCatur had the elementary school at SKST or Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Tengar from 1975 until 1980.

Why GiLoCatur told about this? 

Actually, today a chess tournament was held at the Sabak Bernam's district library located in Sungai Besar just for Sabak Bernam born chess players as well as those who are currently staying, working and studying in the district. Unfortunately, GiLoCatur could not take part in the Closed chess tournament. But GiLoCatur followed the tournament from Shah Alam. It is long due that more and more chess tournaments are held and organized in Sabak Bernam district. 

GiLoCatur dreams that Sabak Bernam can have many strong chess players. GiLoCatur dreams that more and more chess players from the district to represent Selangor in the MSSM chess championship. GiLoCatur strongly hopes that the newly elected MCF President and committees can help all chess clubs all over the country like Sabak Bernam Chess Club in the chess development and events.
