MASUM 2016 - Part 1 (Top 10 Starting Rank)

ALL THE BEST kepada semua peserta Kejohanan Catur MASUM 2016. Semoga maju sukan catur terutamanya di peringkat universiti Malaysia.

MSSM 2016 - Part 1

Statistik Kemenangan Pingat 3 Negeri
Edisi 2010 - 2015

BAKU Chess Olympiad 2016 Countdown

Tuesday, 9/8/2016

It is about 22 days and 19 hours before the Chess Olympiad 2016 will begin. It will be the 42nd edition. The most prestigious biannual chess tournament will be held in BAKU, the capital city of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Countdown

the Open Category

Let's take a look at the favourite country teams in the Open category. Russia whic is led by Vladimir Kramnik is on the Top spot with average ELO rating of 2760. Team USA is second with average ELO rating of 2740 which include Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura and Wesley So. The host country, Azerbaijan, is at the fourth starting rank with average ELO rating of 2705. Among the players in the host country team are Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Teimour Radjabov.

Is the reigning World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen, taking part in the Chess Olympiad 2016? The answer is Yes.

the Top 7 Starting Teams
Malaysia

Let's take a look at the Malaysian team as well as four other ASEAN countries namely Vietnam, The Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia.

Both Li Tian and Mas Hafizulhelmi are not in the list even though both are qualified through the Malaysian Masters selection. GiLoCatur believes Li Tian does not take part due to SPM examination. Both of them are replaced by Mok Tze-Meng and Mohd Kamal Abdullah. The Malaysian team which is captained by Greg Lau has the average ELO rating of 2200.

Malaysia

Vietnam

The Vietnamese team is led by its Top 2 chess players - Le Quang Liem abd Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. Having average ELO rating of 2545, Vietnam is the highest ASEAN country in the starting rank.
Vietnam

the Philippines

Julio Catalino Sadorra, the top player in the latest Philippines FIDE rating list, is leading the Filipino team. Asia's first Grandmaster, Eugenio Torre is also in the team's list as well as the young IM of Paulo Bersamina. The average ELO rating of this team is 2464, the second top ASEAN country in the starting rank.

Philippines

Singapore

With average ELO rating of 2417, Singapore is represented by one Grandmaster and three International Masters.

Singapore

Indonesia

It is quite surprising to know that the Indonesian top chess player (active), Susanto Megaranto is not in the team list. Instead, Utut Adianto is leading the Indonesian team. Actually, Utut is still the top-rank Indonesian chess player, just that he is inactive in the FIDE rating list. The average ELO rating of the Indonesian team is just 70 above the Malaysian's which is 2270. The obvious reason is because its fifth player is rated 1759.

Indonesia
How these five ASEAN countries fared in the last Chess Olympiad?

Vietnam was at 27th place with 5 wins, 4 draws and 2 defeats. Indonesia placed 43rd with 6 wins, one draw and 4 defeats. Meanwhile, The Philippines was 46th after scoring 5 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats. At 57th place was Singapore recording similar results - 5 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats,   with The Philippines.

With 5 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats, Malaysia was ranked 72nd out of 172 teams in the Open category.

NEVER EVER GIVE UP!

To be a champion one must never give up. To be a winner one must never easily quit.

GiLoCatur is so touch with the NEVER GIVE UP spirit and SHEER DETERMINATION attitude of a Kenyan runner named Hyvon Ngetic during Austin Marathon 2015.

Hopefully we, the Malaysian athletes especially the chess players can follow this example.

Click here and here to watch her.

Thank you Saprin for sharing this inspiring story.

Chess Rating of GiLoCatur's Children

For a chess player, chess rating is quite important. For non-chess player, he or she may not know what it is.

What is a chess rating?

A chess rating is a rating system used in chess to calculate an estimate of the strength of the player, based on his or her performance versus other players.

For a Malaysian chess player, there are two chess rating systems. First is FIDE rating. Second is the National (MCF) Rating.

How to get the rating?

For FIDE rating, you need to participate in a FIDE-rated chess tournament. You will get your FIDE rating ID in your first FIDE-rated chess tournament. Will you straight away get the FIDE rating? The answer is not necessarily. You need to play against FIDE-rated opponents and score some minimum points.

For National Rating, you will get one after you have participated in your first nationally-rated chess tournament. And it will be updated accordingly whenever you have taken part in nationally-rated events. The national rating will be calculated and updated every three months or quarterly.

How to check your Malaysian national rating?

One way is to check it at the Malaysian Chess Rating Page. Just make sure that the Page is regularly updated.

the URL - http://myrating.catur.org/index.php

Let's take a look at the national rating of GiLoCatur's children.

Fikri - GACC 2016

Fikri

In Jan2010, Fikri's national rating is 1405. He was 14 years old then. His latest rating is 1757. He broke into 1700-rating in Apr2011. But the rating was down into 1600 range in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Since Jan2015, Fikri's rating has jumped to mid 1700.

Fikri's national rating progress chart

Anis in NAG 2016

Anis Fariha

In Jan2010, Anis had national rating of 1301. She was in her final year of elementary school. In both 2011 and 2012, basically Anis was in the 1500-rating. But it dropped to 1400-rating in 2013 and 2014. Anis was sitting PMR exam in 2013. That is the main reason for this drop which GiLoCatur could think of. During the two years, Anis had played less chess tournaments especially the nationally-rated ones. Starting 2015, Anis' rating has jumped back into 1500. Hopefully, it will climb further to 1600 in the final two quarters of 2016.

Anis' national rating progress chart

Fahim in UiTM Chess Open 2016

Fahim Al-Faqeh

Fahim, GiLoCatur's youngest child, was eight years old in Jan2010. He was still unrated during that time. His first national rating was earned in Apr2011. His rating was 1117. Fahim broke into 1600 in Jul2014. Fahim has yet reach the 1700-rating. GiLoCatur hopes he will join his elder brother in the 1700-rating in the near future.

Chess Tournaments In the Month of August 2016

We are in the month of August already. Seven months have gone by for the year of 2016. GiLoCatur has lost count on the number of local chess tournaments.

Below are several local chess tournaments that will be held in this month.

UiTM Johor Chess Open

In less that two weeks, UiTM Johor will organize a one-day chess tournament at its campus in Segamat. For further detail, please contact Afiq or Iqa as per below flyer.

Kejohanan Catur MSSM 2016

The MSSM Chess Championship for 2016 edition is a bit late compared to previous few years. In the past few years, it is held either in March or in June during school holidays.  But this year, the championship will be held from 13th to 17th August. Kelantan will host the event.

MSSM Chess Championship

Takwim MSSM 2016

Kejohanan Catur MASUM 2016

MASUM Chess Championship for 2016 edition will also be held this month. Chess is one of eight sports events being part of MASUM Phase 1. For info, MASUM is an acronym for Malaysian Universities Sports Council or Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia, in Malay. UNISZA or Sultan Zainal Abidin University, which is located in Terengganu, hosts the event.

MASUM Phase 1 Info

GiLoCatur is looking forward for the above chess events. Hopefully, all the above events will be published on chess-results.com. It is even better if they are broadcast live. GiLoCatur believes not all the Malaysian chess community especially the parents of the participating chess players can be at the tournament venues to follow closely the events.

Hopefully, GiLoCatur can provide the updates and highlight these events in this blog. So, come visit this blog regularly.
